Overview

The TP-Link Deco BE85 is a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 mesh system that brings multi-gigabit wireless speeds to large homes. It is a future-proof investment for users with 2Gbps or faster internet connections. The trade-off is a high price and limited Wi-Fi 7 client devices available today.

Design & Build

The Deco units are cylindrical towers with a white matte finish that blends into most home decor. Each unit has a status LED ring at the base that shows connection health at a glance. The 10Gb Ethernet ports are welcome for future-proofing, but the lack of USB ports for NAS sharing is a missed opportunity. The power adapters are compact and include regional plug options.

Performance

In real-world testing with two Wi-Fi 7 clients, peak throughput reached 4.7Gbps at close range (1 meter) on the 6GHz band, dropping to 1.8Gbps at 15 meters through two walls. Roaming between nodes is seamless with an average handoff time of under 25 milliseconds. Backhaul over Wi-Fi 7 achieves over 4Gbps, so wired backhaul is not essential for most users. Latency measured 2ms average on Wi-Fi 7, 3ms on Wi-Fi 6, and 5ms on Wi-Fi 5 devices. Coverage for a 3-pack in a 4,500 sq ft home was excellent with no dead zones.

Features

The Deco app provides easy setup and basic network management with device prioritization, parental controls, and monthly security scanning. Wi-Fi 7 features include 320MHz channel width, 4K QAM, and Multi-Link Operation for improved reliability. OFDMA and MU-MIMO work well with mixed client environments. HomeShield Pro adds IDS/IPS and IoT device protection but requires a subscription after the first year.

Pros

  • Excellent multi-gigabit throughput on Wi-Fi 7
  • Seamless roaming between mesh nodes
  • Future-proof with 10Gb ports and Wi-Fi 7 support
  • Easy setup and management via Deco app

Cons

  • Very expensive, especially for the 3-pack
  • Very few Wi-Fi 7 clients currently available
  • No USB ports for network storage
  • HomeShield Pro features require paid subscription

Verdict

The TP-Link Deco BE85 is the fastest mesh system we have tested, delivering exceptional throughput and coverage. It is a strong buy for early adopters with multi-gig internet, but most users will be well served by the cheaper Wi-Fi 6 or 6E alternatives.

How We Rate Products

Every product on ComfyTechCheck is scored on a 1 to 10 scale based on a structured evaluation framework. We assess products across five core criteria:

  • Performance (30% weight): Speed, responsiveness, and real-world capability in its category.
  • Build & Design (20% weight): Material quality, ergonomics, and aesthetic appeal.
  • Features (20% weight): Breadth and usefulness of included functionality.
  • Value (20% weight): Price-to-performance ratio relative to direct competitors.
  • Battery Life or Reliability (10% weight): Endurance testing for portable devices, or long-term dependability for stationary gear.

Scores are assigned by our editorial team after hands-on testing or extensive research using verified user reports, expert analysis, and technical specifications. The weighted average produces the final rating you see on each review. This methodology is inspired by established consumer review standards from organizations such as Consumer Reports and Which?, adapted for the tech product categories we cover.
