Methodology
This page explains how our scores and prices work. It describes what the site’s code actually does today.
Spec Score (data-based)
Every review shows a Spec Score (data-based) from 1 to 10.
The score is not calculated by a formula. No part of our code adds up sub-scores or applies weights to produce it. We do not store separate scores for each criterion.
Here is how a score gets set:
- Most reviews: our article generator writes the review draft with an AI writing tool. That tool sets the score. It is told to base the score on product quality and to use the category’s criteria weights (below) as guidance.
- Catalog and older reviews: the score was typed into a product list by hand, along with the specs.
The criteria weights live in our category list. The default weights are Performance & Capabilities 40%, Build & Design Quality 30%, Consumer Value 20%, and User Experience 10%. Some categories use different weights; see How We Rate. The weights guide the score. They are not multiplied out into it.
Because of this, treat the score as a rough guide from spec data, not a measurement.
Data sources
- Specs: manufacturer spec sheets and product pages, plus retailer listings. Each review lists its sources at the bottom where we have them.
- Published reviews and benchmarks: when a review cites a number from another site, the source is named or linked next to it.
- List price (MSRP): stored with each review. For some reviews this was an estimate made when the review was written.
How often prices are checked
We do not promise a set price-check schedule. Prices shown on this site can be out of date. The retailer’s page always has the current price, so check it there before you buy.
Hands-On Tested vs. Spec Score
- Spec Score (data-based): the product was assessed from specs and published data. We did not have the hardware in hand. Every review on the site is currently in this group.
- Hands-On Tested: a green badge appears next to the score only when we have actually used the hardware ourselves. No page has this badge right now.
